Moving? Know What To Do To Take Your Fish With You

As you get closer to your moving date and line up your moving company, you may think that you have everything handled. However, be aware that a moving company is going to get your pets ready for the move. If you have fish in your home, here is what you need to do to take your fish with you.

Stop Feeding Your Fish One Day Before Your Move

While it may seem odd to not feed your fish before moving them, it actually makes a lot of sense. This is because you will want your fish to get rid of all the food inside them prior to being moved from one place to another. If the fish have recently eaten, they are more likely to release that waste while traveling due to being stressed. The waste also limits how much oxygen they have, which is not good for them

Buy An Insulated Fish Box

Check your pet store to see if they have an insulated fish box to move your fish to. The advantage of using this kind of box is that it will keep the water the same temperature, which will make the move more comfortable for your fish and improve their chances of living. This is especially important when you are moving a long distance, or you are moving during extremely warm or cold temperatures. The box should also avoid having the fish in direct sunlight, which helps prevent the water from getting too warm as well.

Having a sealed container that does not allow any light into it will also help your fish calm down. It will be dark, so they will be likely to not move as much, which increases their survival.

Don't Change The Water

You may be tempted to get ready to move your fish by putting them in new water. However, it will be better to use the existing water in your aquarium. It will help ensure that the temperature and pH levels of water is the same, and the fish won't go into environmental shock.

Know What To Do If Moving Last Minute

Sometimes you may not be moving quickly, and not have time to be prepared with an insulated box. If you have small fish, you can use plastic bags to transport them. Just make sure that the bag has ¾ of the container filled with air. You can also use a 5-gallon bucket that has a lid that seals tight, making sure that you have the same amount of air and water in the bucket.
